  • WINNER BEST ACTRESS - JOANNA BONARO and Nominations for BEST TV PILOT * WINNER BEST FEMALE FILMMAKER Kelli K. Barnett dir.- ACTION ON FILM FESTIVAL/HOLLYWOOD DREAMS INTL FESTIVAL

    August 26, 2017

    - Joanna Bonaro’s TV Pilot “Good ‘n Screwed” scored big at last week’s AOF Festival 2017 in Las Vegas. Nominated for Best Actress, Best TV Series/Pilot and Best Female Filmmaker, Bonaro walked away with the award for Best Actress and her Director Kelli K. Barnett won for Best Female Filmmaker.
Del Weston’s AOF Festival, now in its thirteenth year, and its companion festival, Hollywood Dreamz International Film Festival, bring together filmmakers, writers, producers, actors, DPs, and post-production professionals from around the world to have their work recognized and honored.
With much buzz in advance of the screening of “Good ‘n Screwed”, the theatre was filled to capacity and, after it was over, the show received a standing ovation. For the remainder of the festival, Bonaro was consistently approached by her fellow filmmakers, actors and others who all recognized her wearing her signature white outfits that mirrored the image on the “Good ‘n Screwed” poster. The universal reaction was overwhelmingly positive and Bonaro was showered with bouquets of compliments for her performance and for the show’s timely message.
“Good ‘n Screwed” is a modern take on an age-old problem – how do women over 40 get back in the dating game when they find themselves unexpectedly single again? Bonaro said: “I was inspired to create this series by my many female friends who are divorced, widowed, or who have never married. These women now confront the daunting task of dating after 40. Their stories, both humorous and heartbreaking, inspired me to create this series. These women want to see themselves and their stories portrayed in a realistic, moving and human way, and not in the one dimensional supporting roles that are all too common in the industry today.”
While current shows like Grace And Frankie (featuring Emmy-nominated actresses Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin) portray aspects of this growing and important demographic, this over- 40 female audience remains underrepresented on television. There are still many opportunities for quality shows, like “Good ‘n Screwed”, to bring these women into the light and to show them in all their glory, and with all their wonderful flaws. As Bonaro put it, “I wrote this series to showcase our plights, concerns, desires, in an upbeat, humorous way. Each episode explores some very true situations about self-image, sex, marriage and the trials and tribulations of dating over 40 – in all its frustrating, funny glory.”

New Yorker Joanna Bonaro wrote, produced and stars in “Good ‘n Screwed,” a half-hour series about the trials and tribulation of a woman suddenly divorced and back in the dating pool. A self-confessed “Sex And The City” fan, Bonaro has cast a perfect tale for today directed at women over 40. The cast features Robert Funaro (“The Sopranos,” “The Sinner”) and Armen Garo (“Gotham”), with Suzanne H. Smart, Warren Bub, Lori Hammel, Deborah Unger and Ernest Mingione.

The pilot is unspooling at next month’s Action on Film 2017 Festival in Las Vegas

Bonaro is a Native New Yorker, who grew up in The Bronx. She often portrays ballsy, yet vulnerable blue collar wives, moms and cougars, according to her official biography. She’s best known for her roles on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, “The Sopranos”, “BoardWalk Empire” and “Mozart in the Jungle.” (continued click on link)

Actress, producer, creator Joanna Bonaro has written the comedy/dramedy Good ‘n Screwed, which is being rolled out to prospective network outlets later this month. We caught up with the peripatetic Bonaro between production meetings to talk about her creation:

Q: Tell us about the inspiration behind Good ‘n Screwed:

A: I was inspired to create this series by my many female friends who are divorced, widowed, or who have never married. One friend was married for 25 years and out of the blue her husband divorced her, another woman pursued her career so feverishly for 20 years never dated and now feels like a novice.

These women now confront the daunting task of dating after 40. Their stories and other friends’ humorous and heartbreaking experiences inspired me to create this series. Women over 40 are usually portrayed in supporting roles of a certain type. There aren’t very many juicy roles that showcase this age range in all their glory; meaning reflective of all the women you and I know in everyday life. These women want to see a reflection of themselves on their nightly viewing screen.

I wrote this series to showcase our plights, concerns, desires, in an upbeat, humorous way . Each episode explores some very true situations about self-image, sex, marriage and the trials and tribulations of dating over 40 – in all its frustrating, funny glory.

Q: How did you go about casting the show; and, tell us how Robert Funaro (Sopranos; The Sinner) came into the picture; and, give us some of the other actors involved: ......
